Collection: Easement: An Assemblage
Easement: An Assemblage is the convocation of a handful of works from previous series that artist Jade Mikell has brought to life, a meditation on what has led to, and cumulatively is the work presented here today as representative of my interdisciplinary practice.
Easement brings together stages and probings of my practice in fields such as disability, comfort, identity, queerness, the body and the balancing the inheritance of art practices with determining your own creative voice. Easement is an interdisciplinary show that represents works in painterly and sculptural mediums from the emerging artist’s short, but comprehensive studio practice.
I took cues from the material overconsumption pervasive within many factions of our contemporary artmaking industry. In the collective breadth of my present oeuvre, I work with 90% reclaimed materials, with a conscious effort to reach 100% as my practice persists.
in this instance, all of the materials included are upcycled. I rehydrated dried-out paints from my Great-Grandfather’s practice, repurposed paintings discarded by previous makers, and utilised offcuts, recycled paper leftover from the practises of fellow artists, and discarded fabric. In choosing to do this, I hope to both give new honour and dignity to the history and joy behind the previous works, while integrating my own message into their pre-existing narratives.
