The Playthings series is an ongoing art project consisting of handmade toys by Cassia Powell. Each individual plaything is made from repurposed or found material, with each shape and fabric inspiring a story for every individual character.
Inspired by Ty Toys, Webkinz, and other early 90s/2000s ephermera, each Plaything is meant to feel like an old, forgotten favourite toy from childhood. By being able to trace each work back to an individual webpage, this project acts as a virtual memory bank to reflect on the vulnerability and innocence of childlike imagination, while visiting the feeling of fear and discomfort of eventually being forgotten. All with an emphasis on virtual livelihoods, our person digital histories, and the psycological effects of growing up in the age of early tech development.
