Collection: Munbeibi by Hannah
Hannah Stinson is a ceramic artist and illustrator, originally from Northern California and now based on Vancouver Island. She has been working on a project called Munbeibi (moon-bay-bee, Finnish for my baby) since 2014, which comes from a story she imagined about a group of disgruntled moon rocks that have descended from the Moon to Earth, drawn here by their curiosity about humans and their natural surroundings.
Driven by her desire to turn the Munbeibis from her story into physical beings that could keep her company, Hannah ordered a bag of air-dry clay on the internet and learned to sculpt in her tiny apartment, using the bed as a table. Her craft and style have developed through the years, but one thing has remained the same: through the process of sculpting a Munbeibi by hand, each of their personalities are revealed, and in this way they come to life. Hannah’s work is intended to evoke tenderness, the rediscovery of lost childhood dreams, and exploration of hidden worlds that exist inside each of us. Currently, she is sculpting a series of ceramic polly pockets, illustrating a very romantic poodle, and planning a giant Munbeibi statue which might live in the woods.
